Mordfilm Survival Guide to Open Air Festivals
First of all, metal festivals are as much for meeting other people, as it is seeing your favorite bands. So don’t go to this thing, thinking you are only going to see the band you want to see, and then leave. It is almost impossible. So get that thought out of your head!
It is always important to pack appropriately, before you go on any trip, and a fest is included. It is actually more important to plan weeks ahead before you go, so things do not catch you by surprise!!!
1: You need to plan ahead with the drinks, and I mean alcohol! Plan with as few glass containers as possible, as they tend to get broken late into the nights, and impale your feet when you wake. Beer in cans is perfect. The clean up is easy, as there are no caps to hunt for. And you can toss them around like confetti and not worry about them breaking.
2: Where are you going to sleep?
This can be answered best by this, “In whatever is cheap.” Last year, after the “2006 Battle Of Metal Storm” very few tents were still standing, and of those that were, most got tossed on Sunday morning. Like I said, you can never be too careful about what happens.
Also, pay close attention to the tents, the fewer support strings sticking out of the side, bhe better the chance of a drunken headbanger NOT tripping over them, and smashing your tent.
3: FOOD!!!
Food is important. We shouldn’t live on the beer and Asbach alone!! The best thing to do is bring a small, I mean on the floor small camping grill. Again make it cheap. They can be found for about 10 to 15 Euro, and if needed, can be thrown away after the fest without too much worry.
Bring some kind of sealed meats. Bratwurst, Hotdogs, something vacuum sealed. That way, if it gets hot they wont spoil too fast. Usually it won’t in two or three days.
There will also be facilities selling food on the grounds. But for that, you are going to need money. So make a choice.
4: the final thing to remember, Do not be the guy who wears the shirt of the band you are going to go see. Keep the shirt in your pocket, beside a pen, so if after the show they come out, you might be able to get an autograph, and are not left looking like a moron, asking around for a pen.
Also make sure the pen is waterproof, and can be seen on the shirt. A black pen on a black shirt may not be a good idea.
Pack for warm, cold, and wet.
Because like I said you NEVER know what the weather will bring.
The most important two rules of the fests are the easiest…
1: NO FIGHTING
2: HAVE A BLAST, AND ROCK ON!!!!!
